New Taco Spot Set to Change the LoDo Dining Scene
Wil Evans, the owner of Society Sports and Spirits, is set to launch Cantina, a vibrant taco restaurant, located at 1416 Market St., just one block away from his existing bar. Slated to open at the end of January, Evans aims to fill what he sees as a gap in lower-priced dining options in the bustling LoDo district.
An Affordable Dining Experience
Evans emphasizes his goal to offer an accessible lunch and happy hour venue for locals and visitors alike, proposing meals around the $15 mark. "Compared to the pricing on Larimer Square, we want to provide a more reasonably priced option," he stated. Cantina is designed with a unique ordering system where guests will receive their tacos and bowls from a window and customize them with various toppings from a salsa bar, enhancing both the speed of service and the dining experience.
Building a Unique Atmosphere
The concept aims to evoke a casual, inviting ambiance similar to the tapas-style eateries found in Mexico. With outdoor pergolas, vintage decor, and a focus on creating spaces that feel like an urban street or alley, Cantina eschews neon signs and sports broadcasts. Instead, the intention is to attract groups looking for a relaxed happy hour destination.
Community Insights and Local Flavor
HB Hospitality, the firm leasing the space, has had a history of experimenting with various dining concepts in the building. COO Hosnah Safi noted that previous attempts, such as Italian fare and themed bars, did not resonate with the community. "We’ve been trying to determine what that block needs. This block needs food, and it needs good food," Safi reflected. This insight, paired with Evans's extensive experience operating food spots, lays a solid foundation for the restaurant's potential success.
Local Competition and Dining Trends
As Evans gears up for Cantina’s opening, it faces competition from other local favorites such as Tacos Rapidos, known for its authentic and affordable Mexican food. While Tacos Rapidos serves an array of quick bites, Cantina differentiates itself with a focus on custom taco bowls, interactive dining experience, and unique drink options like frozen margaritas and specialty cocktails. The aim is not just to compete but to create a new niche within the vibrant Denver culinary scene.
Future Fun: Taco Tuesdays and More
Cantina will also introduce attractive deals including Taco Tuesdays and a special featuring two tacos and a beer for just $12, positioning itself as a go-to spot for both locals and visitors looking for great food at an affordable price. Evans hinted at the potential for late-night offerings as the venue gains traction.
The Road Ahead for Cantina
As opening day draws closer, Evans remains focused on refining the interior of Cantina while generating buzz surrounding its unique offerings. With positive community engagement and a comprehensive marketing strategy in place from HB Hospitality, Cantina is poised to make a significant impact on the LoDo dining landscape.
