Colorado Unleashes Nature's Treasures with Collard Ranch Wildlife Area
Colorado has just added another gem to its outdoor treasure trove: the newly opened Collard Ranch State Wildlife Area. This stunning expanse, nestled between Kenosha Pass and Fairplay, opens up 1,800 scenic acres for outdoor enthusiasts to explore and enjoy. Officially debuted on August 29, this terrain not only enhances public access for fishing, hunting, and wildlife viewing but also enriches Colorado's commitment to wildlife conservation.
A Landmark Acquisition for Conservation
The Colorado Parks and Wildlife agency has strategically acquired the dream property, investing $8.25 million—which came from Colorado Parks and Wildlife stamp money and Great Outdoors Colorado funding. This development aims to preserve natural landscapes while promoting outdoor recreation. With the purchase of Collard Ranch, Coloradans and visitors alike will now have access to a new venue ideal for a variety of outdoor activities.
What to Expect: Seasonal Opportunities and Safety Precautions
Beginning October 1, the Collard Ranch will serve as a premier hunting ground, requiring orange clothing for hunters to ensure safety. Anglers can cast their lines from May 1 to September 30, providing ample opportunity to engage with wildlife. Although camping is prohibited in this area, the day-use structure invites wildlife enthusiasts and casual observers to immerse themselves in nature. However, users must obtain a daily or annual state wildlife area pass before entry; a separate requirement from the Keep Colorado Wild Pass.
Wildlife Diversity in a Stunning Ambiance
Observers can expect to see a rich tapestry of wildlife, from majestic elk and deer to elusive mountain lions and bears. The area is designed not only for hunters and anglers but also for those who wish to experience the wonders of nature firsthand. With three access points and parking areas available, the stage is set for a rewarding outdoor experience that family and friends can share together.
Join the Next Chapter of Colorado's Rich Outdoors
With the opening of the Collard Ranch State Wildlife Area, Colorado continues to celebrate its rich natural heritage while providing spaces for recreational enjoyment. As Governor Jared Polis noted, this area aligns with a broader effort to enhance outdoor access throughout the state. The doors are now open for residents and visitors to explore the vast beauty of South Park—don't miss your chance to visit this gorgeous new wildlife sanctuary.
