Depaul USA Expands Educational Housing in Denver
In a significant move to support students in need, Depaul USA, a Chicago-based nonprofit dedicated to assisting homeless college students, has recently purchased a property for student housing in Denver. The acquisition of a home located at 1544 N. Pearl St., valued at $1.2 million, marks the organization’s expansion into the Denver market, coinciding with Metropolitan State University of Denver's ongoing construction of its first-ever dormitory.
Partnerships Aimed at Student Retention
Depaul USA’s interim CEO, Sandra Guillory, emphasizes their commitment to partnerships with higher education institutions, stating, "We work with the universities to make sure the students are staying in school. … We think of ourselves as partners." By focusing on collaboration with both MSU Denver and Regis University, Depaul USA aims to ensure that students who face housing insecurity can maintain their educational aspirations while receiving essential support services.
The Challenges of Student Homelessness
The need for such initiatives is underscored by alarming statistics: approximately 14% of college students reported experiencing homelessness in 2024. This scenario not only jeopardizes their education but can also lead to adverse consequences, with many students dropping out without a degree and carrying the burden of student debt. Depaul USA not only provides housing but also offers a range of services including financial planning, employment connections, and assistance with government programs to aid students in navigating the complexities of young adulthood.
Preserving Affordable Housing Amid Gentrification
Guillory highlights an important aspect of this acquisition—the role of nonprofits in preserving affordable housing in gentrifying neighborhoods. The property, which was previously operated by the Colorado Vincentian Volunteers to house recent graduates, will now serve as a stable environment for students, enabling them to live in a community that supports education and personal development.
Adding Value and Resources to Student Life
Depaul USA will employ staff on-site, including a program director and case manager, who will play pivotal roles in supporting residents. Students can live in the house for up to two years, receiving mentoring and practical life skills that will help them transition successfully into adulthood. The nonprofit plans to set up a food pantry within the building, further addressing the foundational needs of students who may be struggling with food insecurity.
A Commitment To Service
Founded in 2009, Depaul USA has a well-established reputation for providing a wide range of social services across several cities. This new Denver location is part of their Dax program, named after Saint Vincent de Paul, recognizing the organization's dedication to service and the impact of educational support on communities. With a strategic effort to assist students in reaching their goals, Depaul USA plays a vital role in addressing the complexities of student homelessness and advocating for equitable access to resources for all students.
Take Action
As communities continue to grapple with growing issues surrounding student homelessness, it’s crucial for parents, homeowners, and concerned citizens to support initiatives that provide educational resources and housing stability for vulnerable students. Engagement with your local nonprofits or educational institutions can significantly impact the lives of these individuals and foster a more supportive environment for future generations.
