Derek Curry, a Louisiana native and former soldier, transitioned from a career in the military to one fueled by his passion for sneakers. His entrepreneurial journey began after he realized the potential in the sneaker market, leading to the opening of Sneaker Politics in 2006, right amidst the urban renaissance of sneaker culture.
Curry noted, "We have accounts with Nike and Adidas to where if Travis Scott drops a shoe, we’re one of 25 stores in the world that will get it." This exclusivity has positioned Sneaker Politics as a must-visit for sneaker enthusiasts.
Pandemic Challenges Foster Innovation
The global pandemic posed significant challenges for retailers, but it also set the stage for strategic shifts in the business model at Sneaker Politics. During the pandemic, Curry adapted by investing in small-batch collaborations, increasing the revenue share of these private-label items from around 10% to roughly 35% to 40%.
“We look at our calendar and have everything planned out versus hoping Adidas has a crazy collaboration,” Curry said, highlighting his focus on brand control and higher margins.
A Unique Offer for Outdoor Enthusiasts
With Colorado being synonymous with outdoor adventures, Curry plans to tailor the product mix at his Denver store to meet the local demand for functional and stylish footwear. He explains that Denver customers favor a high-quality selection that pairs well with their skiing and hiking lifestyles, contrasting it with consumer behavior observed in his Louisiana stores.
“I compare Denver to Austin, where people are more low-key and wanting quality over quantity,” Curry noted, indicating a thoughtful approach to his new store’s product lineup.
The Store's Aesthetics: Creating a Local Touch
On top of its carefully curated sneaker offerings, the new store is investing in its aesthetics. Curry’s design incorporates reclaimed wood from old Denver structures and a cozy vibe integrated into the build-out, costing approximately $500,000.
“It’s a lot of marbles and woods and bricks,” he explained, ensuring that not only the products but also the atmosphere resonate with the local culture.
